Light evening dinner on a table in warm lamplight — eating late at night and sleep

Eating late at night is the norm in Spain, Mexico and many families who only get together at the table in the evening. Here is when dinner becomes “late” for your sleep and what to eat so you wake up rested.

Eating late at night is part of the culture in many countries: in Spain and Mexico people sit down to dinner when elsewhere they’re already getting ready for bed. You don’t have to give up this tradition. What matters is understanding how the timing and content of your evening meal affect sleep, and adjusting the habit a little to suit you.

What time counts as eating late at night?

It depends not on the clock on the wall but on when you go to bed. Most experts suggest eating a full dinner 2–4 hours before bed — if you fall asleep at midnight, dinner at 9 p.m. fits comfortably into that window.

The trouble starts when there’s less than an hour between a heavy meal and your pillow. When you lie down, stomach contents press harder on the lower esophageal sphincter — hence heartburn and restless sleep.

Does eating late at night affect sleep, and what can you eat?

If dinner is unavoidably late, keep it light and simple.

  • Fish or poultry with vegetables, an omelet or soup — instead of fried meat with a side dish.
  • For a small snack: kiwi, nuts, warm milk or plain yogurt.
  • Save spicy, very fatty and acidic foods, caffeine and alcohol for another time — they’re the most likely to keep you awake.

How can you keep the tradition and protect your sleep quality?

  • Move the bulk of your eating to lunch, and keep dinner for conversation and lighter dishes.
  • After eating, take a 10–15-minute walk — a pleasant transition into the evening.
  • Keep a consistent bedtime; more ideas in our article Evening rituals for sound sleep. The Sleep Foundation covers in detail how nutrition in general is linked to sleep.

For a calm evening, you can add a small ritual of your own. Cellergize Evening, according to the company, contains L-theanine, taurine and magnesium and is designed as an evening drink for relaxation. And the Silent Nights patch is an evening sleep patch without melatonin; according to the company, it does not penetrate the skin.
